About CSIA certification
The Canadian Ski Instructors’ Alliance (CSIA) provides Canadian ski instructor qualifications. Certification assesses two areas: Skiing and Teaching. You must meet the required standard in both to earn the full qualification.
The certification pathway begins with Level 1, then progresses to Level 2 and Level 3. Accepted alternative qualifications and requirements for individual tracks are explained on our entry requirements page.
Level 1 — Your first ski instructor qualification
A three-day introduction to ski instruction. You develop your skiing and learn to teach children and adults from their first experience on skis through intermediate ability. Successful candidates are qualified to teach students within this range.
- Who it is for: Confident parallel skiers aged 14+ taking their first step into teaching.
- What you learn: Safe lessons, clear communication, teaching children and helping new skiers progress towards parallel turns.
- Qualification: Meet the Level 1 skiing and teaching standards through assessment during the course.

- Who it is for: Level 1 instructors, or holders of another accepted qualification, ready to develop further.
- What you learn: More effective skiing and teaching on intermediate terrain, adapting lessons and activities to the student.
- Qualification: Complete the Skiing and Teaching tracks and pass both exams. The full programme takes six days.
